Year-End is Here — Let’s Talk Fun (and Tax-Smart) Employee Deductions

As 2025 is winding to a close, many business owners are scrambling to make sure they’ve taken advantage of all possible deductions. Totally fair — no one wants to leave money on the table when it comes to tax savings. The good news? If you have employees, there are some fun and fully strategic ways to thank your team and reduce your taxable income.

At Accent CPA, we work with businesses every year to help them strike the perfect balance between smart tax planning and meaningful employee appreciation. Deductions shouldn’t just be numbers on a spreadsheet — they can also strengthen your workplace culture, reward hard work, and create memories that your team values.

1. Staff Holiday Parties

A classic — and yes, still deductible!

  • Up to 100% deductible when it’s an annual staff event open to all employees. (Watch out for limits on spending for in person, hybrid and virtual events!)
  • This includes meals, venue rentals, entertainment and even transportation home if provided.
  • A great way to celebrate teamwork, boost morale, and still enjoy a tax break.

2. Staff Gifts and Bonuses

You can be generous and tax smart.

Non-cash gifts (gift cards, baskets, experiences):

  • CRA allows up to $500 per employee, per year in non-cash gifts to be tax-free to the employee and deductible for the company.
  • Go beyond the standard gift card — think personalized baskets, spa vouchers, tech gadgets, or local experience packages.

Cash bonuses:

  • Still deductible, but they are taxable to the employee and must be included on their T4.

3. Team Meals or “Appreciation Lunches”

Whether it’s ordering lunch during a busy year-end crunch or taking the team out for a celebratory meal:

  • Usually, 50% deductible for meals and beverages, may be up to 100% deductible!
  • A simple way to restore energy and show appreciation.

4. Wellness Perks and Staff Well-Being

More employers are offering small wellness-related benefits, and many are deductible if structured properly.

Some great options:

  • Gym or fitness memberships (as part of a broader wellness program)
  • Mental health or wellness stipends
  • Office massages or wellness days
  • Healthy snack programs or coffee bar upgrades

5. Staff Clothing or Branded Apparel

If it includes a clear company logo and is part of the required workplace attire:

  • It may be fully deductible.
  • Hoodies, jackets, and golf shirts — a practical gift and great team branding.

6. Professional Development and Education

Investing in your team is also a deduction:

  • Courses, seminars, conferences, CPA prep for accounting staff, leadership workshops — all can be written off.
  • These are 100% deductible when they are connected to the employee’s role.

The best year-end deductions are the ones that:

  • Reduce taxable income.
  • Keep your team engaged and appreciated.
  • Build loyalty going into the new year.

If you aren’t sure what applies to your business — or want to plan something meaningful and tax-efficient — we’re here to help.
