When Was the Last Time You Worked On Your Business?

Last month, we asked: Did you buy yourself a job, or build a career?
Here’s our follow-up question:

Most entrepreneurs spend their days putting out fires – emails, customers, invoices, staffing, and constant problem-solving. That work matters, but it doesn’t drive growth.

Businesses grow and evolve when owners intentionally make time to think strategically. Take a day. Step away. Turn off the notifications. Be the CEO instead of the technician.

Ask yourself:

  • Where do I want this business to be in one year? In three years?
  • Which services and clients are the most profitable? Which ones aren’t?
  • What markets should we pursue next?
  • What systems or technology could improve efficiency?
  • What staffing and training will we need over the next year?
  • What risks should we be addressing now instead of reacting to later?

Create a budget, not just for dollars, but for your time. Plan your hiring before it’s urgent. Focus your marketing on the clients you want to serve. Build systems that allow your business to grow instead of simply keeping up.

Every month, our management team sets aside dedicated time to review staffing needs, training priorities, workflow, client service, and any other areas of the business that require attention. These meetings help ensure we’re continually improving instead of simply reacting to what’s happening around us.

Once a year, our partners step back even further. We dedicate time to reviewing our firm’s long-term vision, setting budgets, discussing staffing plans, evaluating growth opportunities, and mapping out our priorities for the year ahead. Those conversations ensure our daily decisions continue moving us toward our long-term goals.

We also invest in our entire team. Every fall, we close all our offices for our annual Accent Advance, bringing our entire firm together for a day dedicated to learning, collaboration, and growth. While technical training is important, Accent Advance intentionally focuses on the skills that help us better serve our clients and one another. We spend time strengthening communication, leadership, teamwork, client experience, and the values that define who we are. We believe that investing in our people ultimately allows us to provide even better advice and an even higher level of service to our clients.

Whether it’s monthly management meetings, quarterly planning sessions, an annual partner retreat, or investing in our entire team through Accent Advance, one thing remains true. Growth doesn’t happen by accident. It happens when leaders intentionally create the time to pause, reflect, and plan for what’s next.

If you’re ready to step back and start planning for the future of your business, we’d love to be part of that conversation. Whether you’re developing a budget, forecasting cash flow, preparing for growth, planning your next hire, or simply trying to determine what comes next, having a trusted advisor to challenge your thinking and provide an outside perspective can make all the difference.

At Accent CPA, we believe great businesses aren’t built by chance. They’re built through thoughtful planning, informed decisions, and a clear vision for the future. That’s why we strive to be more than your accountant. We aim to be a trusted advisor who understands your business, supports your goals, and helps you navigate the opportunities and challenges ahead. Because when you have Trusted Advice backed by Personal Service, you gain more than financial guidance. You gain a partner invested in helping your business succeed, every step of the way.
