If you’re a caregiver in Manitoba, you may be eligible for a tax credit that could help ease some of the financial burdens of providing care. The Manitoba Caregiver Tax Credit offers up to $1,400 in support for those who provide essential care to an eligible family member.

What Is the Manitoba Caregiver Tax Credit?
The Manitoba Caregiver Tax Credit is a tax credit designed to reduce the amount of provincial income tax owed by caregivers. This tax credit is refundable, which means it can reduce your tax liability, or it can result in a refund if your tax bill is already zero. This benefit can make a significant difference, especially for those who care for family members with high medical needs.
Who is eligible for this tax credit?
It is important to note that the individual providing the care and who is designated as the primary care provider is required to apply for this credit (not the person receiving care). To qualify for this tax credit, you must:
Provide long-term care for a Community Living disABILITY Services or Children’s disABILITY Services participant (age 3 or older) who lives in a private home in Manitoba
OR
Provide long-term care for a person who requires care outlined in the Level of Care Equivalency Guideline form or a Level 2 home care client who lives in a private home in Manitoba within an RHA catchment area
You must also:
- live in Manitoba and receive no pay for care you provide;
- file a Manitoba tax return;
- be designated as the primary caregiver by the care recipient; and
- be the only person claiming the tax credit for this individual.
How Much is the Credit?
The Manitoba Caregiver Tax Credit offers up to $1,400 per eligible person being cared for. The amount you are eligible to receive is not prorated in the year, however you must have met the minimum 90-day qualifying period.
How to Claim the Tax Credit
To apply for this tax credit, you will need to complete the Primary Caregiver Registration Form. It is important to note that the Caregiver is responsible for completing this form and applying to the Province of Manitoba to request approval to claim the Primary Caregiver Tax Credit.
The Care Recipient’s physician must complete the Level of Care Eligibility form that is attached to the Registration Form. This step can be avoided if the Care Recipient is receiving home care services in Manitoba operated by a Regional Health Authority.
The claim recipient must receive the approval of eligibility letter from the Manitoba Tax Assistance Office and file their Manitoba tax return to receive the credit.
The claim is usually approved for three years and then you would normally be required to re-apply for the credit.
